Rooflines built to a 1959 master plan
Research Triangle Park was founded in 1959 after the Research Triangle Committee, formed in 1956, commissioned a preliminary concept plan in 1958 and landscape architect Lewis Clarke drew up the master plan for the park's first phase. Every roofline in RTP was engineered to that plan from the start, rather than added piecemeal the way an older town's building stock grows.
Engineered drainage on a low-rise research campus
Even on RTP's newer, planned building stock, gutter and downspout systems still have to handle Durham's roughly 100 days of measurable rain a year. A drainage plan sized to the original master-planned layout is worth confirming before assuming a low-rise commercial or campus building's roofline needs no attention.
